Why Teenagers Should Care
I was in a conversation the other day with some people and the Supreme Court's recent decision to make gay marriage legal in all states came up. One of the girls in the conversation who was around my age turned to me and said, "I'm so sick of hearing about this gay marriage stuff. I get that it's a problem and all, but why do we have to talk about it all of the time?" I was pretty taken aback by her comment. She was literally sick of talking about something that I thought needed to be talked about more.
That is the trend with people my age these days. American middle school, high school, and a lot of college students have no idea what is going on in their country. I got on Twitter Tuesday night and all I saw were posts about some feud going on between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. Everyone was putting their opinion in about who they thought was right. What saddened me the most was that I knew if I asked any of these people sharing their opinion on this celebrity feud to give me their opinion on the Planned Parenthood scandal they would have no idea what I was talking about. I'm afraid that American teens might be quicker to defend Taylor Swift or Nicki Minaj than innocent babies that are being murdered in the womb everyday and then having their body parts sold to labs.
It's simple really. Priorities. Our priorities lie in hollywood scandals instead of murdered babies. We choose to educate ourselves in what seems more interesting and less depressing. I know I am this way often. The thing that has bothered me the most about this whole situation is that if we young people don't start standing up for what is right, then in the next 20 years, who will? Will we still be talking about a feud between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift when we're 40 and ignoring real life crises? I certainly hope not. There's no telling what condition our country could be in by then.
I'm praying that there are still young people out there who are watching the news, reading the history, and educating themselves on the world's problems instead of celebrity's problems. There is still hope for this country, but the future generations to come have got to be willing to stand up for the truth! I know that hearing about gay marriage, murdered babies, and Marines being killed all of the time can be depressing, but if we don't hear about it and take a stand for what is right, then our country will be down the drain in just a short matter of time.
One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Timothy 4:12. It says, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity."
We might be young, but we can change the future of our country for the better. I'm ready to start making a difference.
