Kim Kardashian or Grace Kelly?

We live in a world that is constantly pushing for equality.... Especially for women. A woman is running for president, it's being pushed that women register for the draft, women are fighting on the front-lines in combat for our country, etc..... It's the "who run the world? Girls!" mentality. Women are also icons.... Women are sexualized a lot in the world of social media and on tv. I remember seeing a Hardee's commercial where a woman was eating a cheeseburger in a skimpy outfit and she was being just a *tad* provocative. It made me so angry. I thought, "That woman must not have much self respect to be in an advertisement like that."

That commercial made me start thinking about women in society today. As unappealing and trashy as it was, I see women sexualizing themselves like that all of the time.... Just in a more simple form. If you go to most 12-20 year old girls Instagram pages and look at their pictures you'll most likely see lots of bikini pictures, selfies that feature cleavage and outfits that would make Kim Kardashian nod her head in approval.

We don't need Hardee's advertisements to sexualize women. We're doing it ourselves. It all comes down to self respect. I say a lot that chivalry and respect is dying out among teenage guys, but are we girls any better if we're helping shove the chivalry and respect out the door because we've lost all respect for ourselves? Should our role models really be Beyonce, the Kardashians and Marilyn Monroe? Come on, girls. We can do better than that.

The kind of guys you will attract with cleavage selfies and close-up bikini pics aren't the kind of guys you want in your life, trust me. This is something I've had to work through in my own mind and I feel that it's so important and SO needs to be talked about. Set your standards higher. Have respect for yourself and show the world that girls can be known for more than their bodies. We have so much more to offer. I respect the women in this world that are well known because of their talents or because they have a good brain and they use it. I'm hoping that one day women who openly sexualize themselves won't be put on such a high pedestal. We could use some more women like Grace Kelly, Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn in the world. These woman were/are extremely famous and yet their fame came from their talents and gracious spirits as well as their beauty. Beauty that was displayed in an honorable way.... A way that didn't demean them as a person. They had self-respect and it was very evident.

It's time for us to gain back lost dignity and be women who display class. We're becoming all too complacent with what we consider beautiful and worthy of respect in our culture. We are worth so much more and it's time we start showing the world that women of class can take back the spotlight.
